Training At Home

Below are various soccer training videos that WSA soccer players can be doing at home.  This page will be updated each week with new videos to challenge and improve our soccer skills and techniques.

Have fun with these skills and use them as an opportunity to get outside, get touches on the ball, and continue enjoying the awesome game of soccer!

Feel free to create a training at home video and tag us on instagram @wakefieldsoccer

Week 1

Toe Taps- https://youtu.be/94KuOfMKG2Q

Tick Tock- https://youtu.be/dRpfwtPv5hA

Tick Tock Take- https://youtu.be/WbLVKfdSMT0

Challenge 1- How many(toe taps, tick tocks, or tick tock takes) can you do in 20 seconds?

Challenge 2- Can you beat your score from the first round(can you beat your best score)?

Week 2

Tick Tock Stop- https://youtu.be/15y7MGYKuN8

Take Stop- https://youtu.be/vkFlgOi4diQ

Add these two foundation technique exercises to the three from last week.

Challenge 1- How many(toe taps, tick socks, or tick tock takes) can you do in 20 seconds?

Challenge 2- Can you beat your score from the first round(can you beat your best score)?

Week 3

Laces Dribbling Technique- https://youtu.be/LRW3UpQrgPQ

Using laces dribbling technique, dribble around using only your laces.

Challenge 1- Only use your right foot

Challenge 2- Only use your left foot

Challenge 3- How many laces touches can you get in 20 seconds?

Figure 8 Dribbling- https://youtu.be/_gOORygHlLE

To get more laces touches over space spread the cones out further. To get more quick laces touches move the clones closer together.  Try completing figure 8s by only using your right foot or by only using your left foot.

How fast can you complete 4 consecutive figure 8s while using both feet? Right foot only? Left foot only?

Revisit weeks 1 and 2 above to continue developing familiarity with the ball at your feet and getting plenty of touches on the ball.

Week 4

Pullback move- https://youtu.be/0pVKHoI36dU

This video also contains an inside cut and an outside cut, but I recommend working on the pull back first.  To work on these moves you can lay out 2-3 cones in a small space(5x5yds) and every time you get to a cone you perform a pullback.  You can also work on the move by dribbling back and forth between two cones.  When dribbling between cones we want to keep control of the ball by keeping it close with little touches.

Simon Says Soccer Game- Simon Says is a great game you can use to help work on various soccer skills.  Use our skills listed above(toe taps, tick tocks, etc.) as commands for Simon Says.

Week 5

Games!- All these games can be done with or without a ball.  If you are using a ball we have all the skills listed in previous weeks that you can use in these games.  If you are not using a ball you can use skips, one foot hops, two foot hops, gallops, and backwards run.

Red Light, Green Light

This is a great game that players can use with or without a soccer ball.  Feel free to add more colors to keep the game interesting. i.e.: red light-stop, green light=go, yellow light= slow, blue light= toe taps, orange light= tick tocks, purple light=knee on the ball.  You can make up anything you want, but this can be a great game to get some touches on the ball.

Tag

Tag is another great game with or without the ball that works on changing direction and watching where we are going.

Simon Says

Described in last weeks update

Follow the Leader

Players will mimic what the leader is doing.  This can be with a ball or without a ball.  Feel free to use the skills that we have in our previous weeks.  Also if you can make a goal of some sort that always provides a lot of excitement for younger players when they have the ability to score goals. Let the player be the leader then so they have the opportunity to recall some of the skills we have worked on.

Week 6

Toe Taps- https://youtu.be/94KuOfMKG2Q

Tick Tock- https://youtu.be/dRpfwtPv5hA

Challenge 1- How many(toe taps, tick tocks) can you do in 20 seconds?

Challenge 2- Can you beat your score from the first round(can you beat your best score)?

Soccer Bowling- Using tall cones or water botttles set up a triangle using them much like you would with bowling pins.  To start take 5 steps from the top of the triangle and that will be the starting point.  Player passes the ball into the cones and gets a point for each cone that is knocked down.  Take 2 turns before resetting the triangle.  If it is too easy back up another 5 steps or until it is a more difficult distance.

Week 7

Tick Tock Stop- https://youtu.be/15y7MGYKuN8

Take Stop- https://youtu.be/vkFlgOi4diQ

Soccer Golf- Pick an object as your target and try to pass the ball and hit the target.  Count how many passes it takes you until you hit the target.  Whoever has less passes for that target gets to pick the next target.  Play 6 rounds and try to vary the distance and difficulty in passing to the target.  Think mini golf but with a soccer ball and our feet.

Week 8

Laces Dribbling Technique- https://youtu.be/LRW3UpQrgPQ

Using laces dribbling technique, dribble around using only your laces.

Challenge 1- Only use your right foot

Challenge 2- Only use your left foot

Challenge 3- How many laces touches can you get in 20 seconds?

Figure 8 Dribbling- https://youtu.be/_gOORygHlLE

Red Light, Green Light

This is a great game that players can use with or without a soccer ball.  Feel free to add more colors to keep the game interesting. i.e.: red light-stop, green light=go, yellow light= slow, blue light= toe taps, orange light= tick tocks, purple light=knee on the ball.  You can make up anything you want, but this can be a great game to get some touches on the ball.

Simon Says Soccer Game- Simon Says is a great game you can use to help work on various soccer skills.  Use our skills listed above(toe taps, tick tocks, etc.) as commands for Simon Says. Feel free to be creative with this game with commands like “Simon says, pretend the ball is a telephone” or “Simon says, pretend the soccer ball is a drum”.

Week 9

Pullback move- https://youtu.be/0pVKHoI36dU

Tag

Tag is another great game with or without the ball that works on changing direction and watching where we are going. The pullback move we are working on this week is a great move to change direction while playing tag.  If the player gets tagged have them do 5 toe taps or 5 tick tocks before they start dribbling again.

Week 10

Follow the Leader- Players will mimic what the leader is doing.

Freeze Tag- This can be played with or without a ball.  If you do use a ball a player who is frozen becomes unfrozen by an unfrozen player passing the ball between then legs of the frozen player.  This game works best with 3 or more players.  To make it more difficult for the tagger you could have them dribble a ball too.

Week 11

Toe Taps- https://youtu.be/94KuOfMKG2Q

Tick Tock- https://youtu.be/dRpfwtPv5hA

Tick Tock Take- https://youtu.be/WbLVKfdSMT0

Tick Tock Stop- https://youtu.be/15y7MGYKuN8

Take Stop- https://youtu.be/vkFlgOi4diQ

Challenge 1- How many(toe taps, tick tocks, or tick tock takes) can you do in 20 seconds?

Challenge 2- Can you beat your score from the first round(can you beat your best score)?

Soccer Golf- Pick an object as your target and try to pass the ball and hit the target.  Count how many passes it takes you until you hit the target.  Whoever has less passes for that target gets to pick the next target.  Play 6 rounds and try to vary the distance and difficulty in passing to the target.  Think mini golf but with a soccer ball and our feet.

Week 12

Dribbling Session Plan- https://www.mayouthsoccer.org/assets/61/6/1-u6u8_dribbling___stop.pdf

This is a great mini session for players to work on dribbling the ball.  We have done the majority of these skills, but now we are trying to stay within our box so control becomes more important.  For reference: sole taps=toe taps, short kick-stop= pushing the ball forward with their laces and then using the sole of their foot to stop the ball.

Follow the Leader- Players will mimic what the leader is doing.  This can be with a ball or without a ball.  Feel free to use the skills that we have in our previous weeks and in this weeks session.  Also if you can make a goal of some sort that always provides a lot of excitement for younger players when they have the ability to score goals. Let the player be the leader then so they have the opportunity to recall some of the skills we have worked on.

Week 13

Scissors 1v1 Move- https://youtu.be/5vENehfAMTc

Start slow and go through the scissors movement from a stranding position to get the movement correct.  Once you feel familiar with the move from a standstill go ahead and try it while on the dribble.

Revisit weeks 1 and 2 above to continue developing familiarity with the ball at your feet and getting plenty of touches on the ball.

Week 4

Inside Cut, Outside Cut, and Pullback move- https://youtu.be/0pVKHoI36dU

Stop and Go- https://youtu.be/7z0GQ0IC6u8

I recommend learning and working on one move at a time.  To work on these moves you can lay out 3-4 cones in a small space(5x5yds) and every time you get to a cone you perform a move(i.e. pullback).  You can also work on the move by dribbling back and forth between two cones.  When dribbling between cones we want to use our laces dribbling technique and keep control of the ball.

Week 5

15 Ball Mastery Techniques- https://youtu.be/oP3XuwHK6sA

Perform each technique 20 times and this will turn out to be a lot of touches in a short amount of time!

Passing Technique- https://youtu.be/Sm-u_ESEmjE

This video shows proper passing technique and players can work on this with a partner, a wall to pass against, or even by making this tennis ball training tool, https://youtu.be/nSaY_w77FJc

Receiving the ball- https://youtu.be/RZyviLvidps

When we work on passing we also need to work on receiving the ball.  This video refers to the large middle surface of the inside of the foot as the”meaty” part fo the foot.  Start with very short passes(2-3 steps apart) to work on the technique before trying anything further away.

Week 6

Wall Ball Workout- https://youtu.be/LoJ5dsFz59s

This is a great way to get a lot of repetitions with your passing technique.  If you need a refresher on passing technique take a look at the video from week 5.  In this video I recommend only doing the second wall exercise he demonstrates, 2 touch passing.  Here is an example of a workout you could do:

Right foot two touch passing- 10 reps

Left foot two touch passing- 10 reps

Alternating 2 touch passing(receive right, pass left or receive left and pass right)- 10 reps

Right foot two touch passing- 10 reps

Left foot two touch passing- 10 reps

Alternating 2 touch passing(receive right, pass left or receive left and pass right)- 10 reps

Right foot two touch passing- 10 reps

Left foot two touch passing- 10 reps

Alternating 2 touch passing(receive right, pass left or receive left and pass right)- 10 reps

Try 10 one touch passes

Total= 100 passes!

Week 7

Let’s revisit our Coerver skills and increase the difficulty by following this video(work on skills #1-9): https://youtu.be/IeMYh7roBjk

Do 10 reps of each skill before moving to the next skill.  Once you get through skill 1 through 9 start back at the beginning and go through them a second time.  These skills are great at getting players comfortable with the ball at their feet by being up on their toes and getting a lot of touches on the ball in a minimal amount of space.

For the skills that are new, start slow and make sure they correct before trying to add in speed.  It’s much better to do them correctly and slow than fast and incorrect.  When you get comfortable with the skill then add speed to continue challenging yourself.

Week 8

Games!  These games will be a lot of fun and a great review of our skills and techniques we have been working on over the past 7 weeks.

Red Light, Green Light- This is a great game that players can use with a soccer ball.  Feel free to add more colors to keep the game interesting and challenging. i.e.: red light-stop, green light=go, yellow light= slow, blue light= toe taps, orange light= tick tocks, purple light=knee on the ball.  You can make up anything you want, but this can be a great game to get some touches on the ball.

Simon Says – Simon Says is a great game you can use to help work on various soccer skills.  Use our skills listed above(toe taps, tick tocks, scissors move, inside cut, etc.) as commands for Simon Says.

Week 9

This week we are revisiting Week 3 and Week 4 to continue working on key dribbling techniques and skills.

Figure 8 Dribbling- https://youtu.be/_gOORygHlLE

To get more laces touches over space spread the cones out further. To get more quick laces touches move the clones closer together.  Try completing figure 8s by only using your right foot or by only using your left foot.

Week 10

Le’s revisit our Coerver skills and increase the difficulty by following this video (work on skills #1-14): https://youtu.be/IeMYh7roBjk

Do 10 reps of each skill before moving to the next skill.  Once you get through skill 1 through 14 start back at the beginning and go through them a second time.

An additional benefit to working on these skills is that it works on footwork, quick feet, and teaches players to be on their toes.

Week 11

Wall Ball Workout- https://youtu.be/LoJ5dsFz59s

This is a great way to get a lot of repetitions with your passing technique.  If you need a refresher on passing technique take a look at the video from week 5.  In this video I recommend only doing the second wall exercise he demonstrates, 2 touch passing.  Here is an example of a workout you could do:

Right foot two touch passing- 12 reps

Left foot two touch passing- 12 reps

Alternating 2 touch passing(receive right, pass left or receive left and pass right)- 12 reps

Try 12 one touch passes

Total= 120 passes!

Week 12

15 Ball Mastery Techniques- https://youtu.be/oP3XuwHK6sA

Perform each technique 25 times and this will turn out to be a lot of touches in a short amount of time!

How fast can you complete 6 consecutive figure 8s while using both feet? Right foot only? Left foot only?

Scissors 1v1 Move- https://youtu.be/5vENehfAMTc

Start slow and go through the scissors movement from a stranding position to get the movement correct.  Once you feel familiar with the move from a standstill go ahead and try it while on the dribble.  If you are now comfortable with the move try performing the move at a fast speed.  Remember that it’s change of direction and change of speed that help us get past a defender.  We want to accelerate out of the move to get separation from a defender.

To get more touches through this video perform each activity 6 times.  Two times using both feet, two times using your right foot, and two times using your left foot.

Revisit weeks 1 and 2

Week 4

Inside Cut, Outside Cut, and Pullback move- https://youtu.be/0pVKHoI36dU

Stop and Go- https://youtu.be/7z0GQ0IC6u8

Scissors- https://youtu.be/5vENehfAMTc

Step Over Turn- https://youtu.be/Z2XcxeCE-1M

I recommend learning and working on one move at a time.  To work on these moves you can lay out 4-6 cones in a small space(5x5yds) and every time you get to a cone you perform a move(i.e. pullback).  You can also work on the move by dribbling back and forth between two cones.  When dribbling between cones we want to use our laces dribbling technique and keep control of the ball.

Tennis Ball Training tool- https://youtu.be/nSaY_w77FJc

This is a great tool that you can make at home! This tool allows you to work on passing and receiving technique on your own.

Week 5

15 Ball Mastery Techniques- https://youtu.be/oP3XuwHK6sA

Perform each technique 30 times and this will turn out to be a lot of touches in a short amount of time!

Passing Technique- https://youtu.be/Sm-u_ESEmjE

This video shows proper passing technique and players can work on this with a partner, a wall to pass against, or even by making this tennis ball training tool, https://youtu.be/nSaY_w77FJc

No matter how you are working on your passing technique try this workout to get a lot of repetitions:

10 passing/receiving with the right foot

10 passing/receiving with the left foot

10 passing/receiving alternating feet(receive with the right, pass with the right, receive with the left, pass with the left)

10 receiving touch across your body(receive with the right, pass with your left)

Complete this whole workout 3x total for 120 passes and 120 receiving touches.  Please note that everything is two touches.

Week 6

Wall Ball Workout- https://youtu.be/LoJ5dsFz59s

This is a great way to get a lot of repetitions with your passing technique.  If you need a refresher on passing technique take a look at the video from week 5.  In this video I recommend only doing the first two wall exercises he demonstrates, 1 touch passing and 2 touch passing.  Here is an example of a workout you could do:

Right foot one touch passing- 20 reps

Left foot one touch passing- 20 reps

Alternating one touch passing(right foot, left foot, right foot , left foot)- 20 reps

Right foot one touch passing- 20 reps

Left foot one touch passing- 20 reps

Alternating one touch passing(right foot, left foot, right foot , left foot)- 20 reps

Right foot two touch passing- 20 reps

Left foot two touch passing- 20 reps

Alternating 2 touch passing(receive right, pass left or receive left and pass right)- 20 reps

Right foot two touch passing- 20 reps

Left foot two touch passing- 20 reps

Alternating 2 touch passing(receive right, pass left or receive left and pass right)- 20 reps

Total= 240 passes!

Week 7

Close Control Dribbling- https://youtu.be/NMfLJynwyTk

This video has 32 variations, but focus on numbers 1 through 7 this week.  The cones are set up about one yard apart and there are 7 cones total.  It is very important to be on your toes when going through this.  As soccer players we should always be on our toes, but this is great for quick feet as well as working on your dribbling. Here is an example workout plan:

Single leg weave(right foot)

Single leg weave(left foot)

4x each

Outside foot only

4x

Two touch outside inside(right foot)

Two touch outside inside(left foot)

4x each

La Croqueta(This is a very difficult skill)- The key point of this skill is the firm horizontal touch that goes through the cones followed by the vertical touch forward by the opposite foot.

4x

Inside Inside

4x

If you revisit the wall ball session from last week here is a video that gives some great tips on how to get comfortable using your weaker foot: https://youtu.be/Md2SQRN4054

Week 8

Games!  These games will be a lot of fun and a great review of our skills and techniques we have been working on over the past 7 weeks.

Garbage Can Challenge- https://www.mayouthsoccer.org/assets/61/6/garbage_can_challenge.pdf check this game out on MA Youth Soccer.  You can use other items in place of garbage cans like tall cones or water bottles if necessary.  Check out the progressions too to make it more difficult!

Week 9

This week we are combining Week 3 and Week 4 to continue working on our dribbling control and speed and also continue working on some great moves that will help in 1v1 situations.

5 Dribbling Activities- https://youtu.be/jwIHc9rz7yo

To get more touches through this video perform each activity 9 times.  Three times using both feet, three times using your right foot, and three times using your left foot.

Week 10

Let’s work on our Coerver skills and increase the difficulty by following this video (work on skills #1-20): https://youtu.be/IeMYh7roBjk

Do 10 reps of each skill before moving to the next skill.  Once you get through skill 1 through 20 start back at the beginning and go through them a second time(d0n’t forget to take a break between round 1 and round 2).

An additional benefit to working on these skills is that it works on footwork and quick feet.

Week 11

Wall Ball Workout- https://youtu.be/LoJ5dsFz59s

This is a great way to get a lot of repetitions with your passing technique.  If you need a refresher on passing technique take a look at the video from week 5.  In this video I recommend only doing the first two wall exercises he demonstrates, 1 touch passing and 2 touch passing.  Here is an example of a workout you could do:

Right foot one touch passing- 25 reps

Left foot one touch passing- 25 reps

Alternating one touch passing(right foot, left foot, right foot , left foot)- 30 reps

Right foot one touch passing- 25 reps

Left foot one touch passing- 25 reps

Alternating one touch passing(right foot, left foot, right foot , left foot)- 30 reps

Right foot two touch passing- 25 reps

Left foot two touch passing- 25 reps

Alternating 2 touch passing(receive right, pass left or receive left and pass right)- 30 reps

Right foot two touch passing- 25 reps

Left foot two touch passing- 25 reps

Alternating 2 touch passing(receive right, pass left or receive left and pass right)- 30 reps

Total= 320 passes!

Week 12

Train Like a Pro session Part 1- https://youtu.be/deh07Qar5wI

Train Like a Pro session Part 2- https://youtu.be/78P-OMMJ8jQ

This two part series is similar to the 15 Ball Mastery Techniques video we worked through before except part 2 of this series does a great job showing various turns you can do with the ball.

Perform each skill 20 times and each turn 10 times before moving to the next one. I do not recommend this age group to perform the fitness portion at the end of part 2.

Week 13

If you revisit the wall ball session from last week here is a video that gives some great tips on how to get comfortable using your weaker foot: https://youtu.be/Md2SQRN4054

Week 1

Toe Taps- https://youtu.be/94KuOfMKG2Q

Tick Tock- https://youtu.be/dRpfwtPv5hA

Tick Tock Take- https://youtu.be/WbLVKfdSMT0

Take Stop- https://youtu.be/vkFlgOi4diQ

Tick Tock Stop- https://youtu.be/15y7MGYKuN8

Challenge 1- How many(toe taps, tick socks, tick tock takes, etc.) can you do in 30 seconds?

Challenge 2- Can you beat your score from the first round(can you beat your best score)?

Challenge 3- Can you change between the five skills without stopping? Start with changing between two skills and then add in one at a time to increase difficulty.

Week 2

Laces Dribbling Technique- https://youtu.be/LRW3UpQrgPQ

Using laces dribbling technique, dribble around using only your laces.

Challenge 1- Only use your right foot

Challenge 2- Only use your left foot

Challenge 3- How many laces touches can you get in 20 seconds?

Figure 8 Dribbling- https://youtu.be/_gOORygHlLE

To get more laces touches over space spread the cones out further. To get more quick laces touches move the clones closer together.

Challenge 1- Only use your right foot

Challenge 2- Only use your left foot

Challenge 3- How many figure 8s can you get in 30 seconds?

Week 3

5 Dribbling Activities- https://youtu.be/jwIHc9rz7yo

To get more touches through this video perform each activity 9 times.  Three times using both feet, three times using your right foot, and three times using your left foot.

Revisit weeks 1 and 2

Week 4

Inside Cut, Outside Cut, and Pullback move- https://youtu.be/0pVKHoI36dU

Stop and Go- https://youtu.be/7z0GQ0IC6u8

Scissors- https://youtu.be/5vENehfAMTc

Step Over Turn- https://youtu.be/Z2XcxeCE-1M

Cruyff and Maradona- https://youtu.be/zVEeum8wA6U

Perform each technique 50 times and this will turn out to be a lot of touches in a short amount of time!

No matter how you are working on your passing technique try this workout to get a lot of repetitions:

15 passing/receiving with the right foot

15 passing/receiving with the left foot

15 passing/receiving alternating feet(receive with the right, pass with the right, receive with the left, pass with the left)

15 receiving touch across your body(receive with the right, pass with your left)

Complete this whole workout 3x total for 180 passes and 180 receiving touches.  Please note that everything is two touches.

Week 6

If you would like some tips on using your weaker foot here is a video that shows how to work on your weaker foot: https://youtu.be/Md2SQRN4054

Week 8

Games!  These games will be a lot of fun and a great review of our skills and techniques we have been working on over the past 7 weeks.

Soccer Tennis- https://www.mayouthsoccer.org/assets/61/6/soccer_tennis.pdf This is an awesome game that will challenge your juggling skills.

Week 9

This week we are combining Week 3 and Week 4 to continue working on our dribbling control and speed and also continue working on some great moves that will help in 1v1 situations.

5 Dribbling Activities- https://youtu.be/jwIHc9rz7yo

To get more touches through this video perform each activity 12 times.  Four times using both feet, four times using your right foot, and four times using your left foot.

Another option is to use your soccer wall and incorporating the moves into a soccer wall workout.  For example, after receiving a ball off the wall you could; turn, dribble away from the wall and use a scissors move, use an inside cut to turn back towards the wall, dribble back closer to the wall, then pass again and repeat.  This is demonstrated in a post on our Instagram account @wakefieldsoccer.

Week 10

Let’s work on our Coerver skills and increase the difficulty by following this video(work on skills #1-20): https://youtu.be/IeMYh7roBjk

Do 20 reps of each skill before moving to the next skill.  Once you get through skill 1 through 20 start back at the beginning and go through them a second time(don’t forget to take a 3 minute break in between round 1 and round 2).

Total- 360 passes!

If you have a wall that is tall enough try the fourth exercise the video demonstrates where the player volleys against the wall.  This is a great challenge to keep the ball up!  Keep your score each time and see what you can get as your high score.  You may find it easiest to use the inside of your foot as much as possible since that’s the largest surface we can use to have control of the ball.

If you would like some tips on using your weaker foot here is a video that shows how to work on your weaker foot: https://youtu.be/Md2SQRN4054

3,2,1 Juggling Challenge- This juggling game is great to work on your touch and also listening to instructions. Have a sibling or parent throw a ball(nicely) up in the air and say “1”, “2”, or “3”.  Whichever number they say is the number of touches you must take to get the ball back to them.  If you complete the command you get a point.  If you do not complete it successfully your sibling/parent gets a point.

Perform each skill 30 times and each turn 10 times before moving to the next one. After going through each skill take a 2 minute break then go through each skill again(20 times for each skill and 10 times each turn). I do not recommend going through the fitness portion at the end of part 2.

Week 13

Close Control Dribbling- https://youtu.be/NMfLJynwyTk

This video has 32 variations, but focus on numbers 1 through 11 this week.

5x each

Outside foot only

5x

Two touch outside inside(right foot)

Two touch outside inside(left foot)

5x each

La Croqueta- The key point of this skill is the firm horizontal touch with the inside of the foot that goes through the cones followed by the vertical touch forward by the opposite foot.

5x

Inside Inside

5x

Croqueta outside left

Croqueta outside right

5x

Inside outside

5x

Sole roll stop

5x
